Your Weekly COVID-19 Update

June 9, 2021

Reminder: Accelerated Second Doses

Earlier this week, the province began booking accelerated second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for people over the age of 70 years, or those who received the first dose on or before April 18, regardless of age.

For the past month, the ODA has advocated for the Ministry of Health to accelerate access to the second dose to more Ontarians, including dentists and their teams, as the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine increases. We are encouraged that the Ministry of Health has prioritized those who were previously prioritized for the first dose. Priority access to the first dose was also a result of ODA advocacy.

Get more details about accelerated second dose timing and how to reschedule your appointment on the ODA website.

Step One of Roadmap to Reopen

On June 7, 2021, the provincial government announced that based on the vaccination rate and continuing improvements in key public health and health system indicators, and in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the province will move into Step One of its Roadmap to Reopen at 12:01 am on Friday, June 11, 2021. See the full list of the outdoor spaces and indoor settings permitted to open.

Temporary Layoff Exemption Extension

As a result of advocacy by the ODA and small businesses, the Government of Ontario introduced a regulation under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 on May 29, 2020, that provided relief to any employer that had temporarily laid off or reduced the wages and/or hours of a non-union employee due to COVID-19. The regulation exempts any such layoff or reduction from being deemed a termination or employment. This regulation has been extended to September 25, 2021. Members are encouraged to consult with their legal counsel prior to considering termination of employees.

Latest PPE Offers

This week’s PPE offers include savings on gloves, fit testing, as well as special promos on ODA Supply Hub. Find the latest offers or learn more about the PPE vendor programs on the ODA website.

ODA Committee Mid-Term Elections: Get Your Applications in by Monday

We’re now taking applications for several open committee positions. The deadline to get in your application forms and materials has been extended to 11:59 pm on Monday, June 14.
