Accelerated Second Doses: What You Need to Know

Starting today, the province will begin booking accelerated second doses for people over the age of 70 years, or those who received the first dose on or before April 18, regardless of age.

If you are eligible, there are several ways you can reschedule your second dose appointment for an earlier slot. In some cases, your second appointment may have been automatically rebooked for you, depending on the location where you got your first dose. Here are your options:

  • You may want to check with the location where you received your first dose before rescheduling to find out how this is being handled. Some locations will have this information available on their website.
  • Book through the provincial booking system or call centre. If your original second dose was booked through the provincial booking system, it will automatically be cancelled once you book a new appointment. Go to covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine OR call the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line at 1–833–943–3900.
  • Book through select pharmacies and primary care settings participating in the vaccine rollout. If your first dose was Astra Zeneca, you can choose to get an mRNA vaccine (Moderna or Pfizer) as your second dose.
  • Book through your local Public Health Unit's booking system.
If you already have an appointment scheduled for your second dose, and you book a new appointment for an earlier date, please ensure your original second–dose appointment has been cancelled if it has not been automatically done for you, so that it can be provided to someone else. This is particularly the case if you are booking at a different location from where you got your first dose (e.g. through the provincial booking system versus a hospital setting).

The province has developed a COVID-19 Vaccine Series Second Dose Eligibility Quick Reference. Refer to this document for more information and booking eligibility for other groups. This reference guide is subject to change.

This information is current as of June 7, 2021. Further updates will be provided as necessary. If you have any questions, please direct those to professionalaffairs@oda.ca.
